The narrator's early life unfolds through the volatile relationship between Ducky and Lola — a mechanic father, brutal yet nurturing, and a European mother trapped in cycles of love and conflict. A catastrophic wildfire changes everything.

Introduces "The Elsewhere" — a metaphysical space existing beyond conventional time and consciousness. A realm incomprehensible through standard language but accessible through intuitive understanding: "a cycle within the universe where nothing is, but could be, and possible."
