Why $100 a Month of Facebook Ads Doesn't Work (and What Does)

It's the most common story we hear from small business owners. You put $100 into Facebook or Instagram ads, maybe boost a post or two. A few likes trickle in, a couple of clicks, no phone calls. You decide ads don't work for a business like yours, and you go back to word of mouth.
The ads weren't the problem. The budget was. Not because the platforms are greedy, but because of how they learn — and because of what a real enquiry actually costs in Australia.
The platforms need room to learn
When you run an ad on Facebook or Instagram, Meta's system spends the first part of your budget experimenting: showing the ad to different people, at different times, in different places, and watching who responds. Meta's own rule of thumb is that an ad set needs around 50 results a week to finish this "learning phase" and settle into delivering well.
A small budget can't get anywhere near that. Your ad stays "learning limited" — still guessing — for as long as it runs. You're paying for the experiment and never getting the payoff.
What an enquiry really costs
Industry trackers put the average cost of a Facebook or Instagram lead in Australia at roughly $23 to $58, depending on the industry — lower for real estate, higher for retail. Your number will depend on your offer, your area and your ads, but it's a fair starting point.
Do the maths on $100 a month and you get somewhere between two and four enquiries. Some months you'll get none. That's not enough to tell a good ad from a bad one, let alone build a steady flow of customers.
At $900 a month — about $30 a day — the same costs work out to roughly 15 to 39 enquiries. Now the platform has enough results to learn from, you have enough data to see what's working, and the phone actually rings.
How to size your budget
Work backwards from what you need, not forwards from what feels comfortable:
- Decide what counts as an enquiry. A call, a message, a booking, a quote request, an order.
- Pick a monthly target. How many enquiries would make a real difference? Twenty? Fifty?
- Multiply by a realistic cost per enquiry. Start with $25–$50 if you have no history; use your own numbers once you do.
- Divide by 30 for your daily budget. Then give it at least a month before judging it.
Here's what that looks like for three typical businesses:
- A café filling quiet weeknights: around $450 a month (about $15 a day).
- A plumber wanting more call-outs: around $900 a month (about $30 a day).
- A clinic opening a second location: around $2,500 a month (about $80 a day).
These are starting points, not promises. The right budget is the one that hits your target cost per enquiry — and you'll only find that by running ads long enough to learn.
Spend it in one place, and keep the ads fresh
Two more things decide whether a budget works:
- Don't split a small budget. Under about $1,500 a month, put it all on one platform and one ad set so it learns faster. Post the same ad for free everywhere else.
- Give the platform choices. Run a few versions of each ad — the offer said straight, a local story or review, and the customer's problem with your fix — and let the platform show more of the one people respond to. Then refresh them often; tired ads get expensive.
- Make the next step easy. For local businesses, "Message us" and "Call now" usually beat "Learn more". Fewer taps, more enquiries.
What to look for in anyone running your ads
Whether you do it yourself, hire an agency or use a service, check for these:
- Your ad budget is spent on ads. Ask what's markup and what actually reaches Meta or Google.
- A minimum budget that can work — not a cheap plan that quietly can't.
- Fresh creative every week, in more than one version.
- Reporting in enquiries and cost per enquiry, not just likes and reach.
- No lock-in contract, so they have to keep earning your business.
How Soulwidth does it
We built Soulwidth around exactly this. Every plan comes with an ad budget sized to work — from $300 a month on Self-serve, $600 on Managed and $1,500 on Growth Partner — on the same bill as your plan, with 100% of it spent on your ads and no markup. Every week you get a new ad in three versions, approved by a Soulwidth ad expert and by you, plus a 12-week plan and a report that shows your cost per enquiry.
And because we know the first month is a leap of faith: if your ads bring you no enquiries in your first full month, your second month's Soulwidth fee is free.
